2013 Youth Camp at Inle Lake

Every year, Myanmar Youths in Action organizes youth camps so that youths can gain more knowledge, increase interaction, and to encourage youths to take part in social works. For 2013, our youth camp will be held at Inle Lake in Shan State. We have currently selected the date to be from January 4 -6, 2013.

Inle Lake is a freshwater lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township of Taunggyi District of Shan State, part of Shan Hills in Myanmar (Burma). It is the second largest lake in Myanmar, and one of the highest. There are many NGOs in Inle Lake who are doing environmental projects.

During our trip, we will be doing study tours at NGOs in Inle, study the waste handling system there and assist them, and learn more about the Inle Lake region. There will also be fun group games.

We are inviting all youths between the age of 18 and 35. All applicants must be active players in youth work and volunteerism working for the society. Applicants will need to have basic knowledge on environment protection. All selected participants will need to pay 35,000 Ks., which will cover transportation and accommodation.

Waste Education Program

With the purpose of building better future with the power of youth, Myanmar Youths in Action initiated the project “Small Education”. We believe that education is the basic need for every development of the country. And, education is also included in number 2 of Millennium Development Goals. To help in enhancing the youths’ education and to participate in attaining the MDGs at one angle are also motivation of the project.

As a part of our "Small Education" Project, Myanmar Youths in Action will be starting our "Waste Education" program at monastic education centres and orphanages starting at the end of this month. 

 

The purpose of this program is to raise awareness about proper waste handling. Myanmar people are used to throw trash on the streets, in the drainage, behind the house, in the river and etc. They usually throw the kitchen waste in the designed municipal dump sites, but every day wastes such as plastic bottles, beer cans, paper, plastic bags are thrown away easily instead of in waste bins. Currently, the municipal has been starting the proper waste throwing, and throwing waste in different categories (kitchen waste and other wastes), so we, Myanmar Youths in Action, plans to assist in their effort for the betterment of the whole country.

 

Since the start of 2012, we have donated many trash bins to pagodas, Thuwanna football stadium, and other public places. We have also volunteered for trash picking at international football games at Thuwanna Stadium.

For the current "Waste Education" program, we have chosen three schools to start our project:

1. Aung Zeyar Min Monastic Education Centre
   A Le Ywar, Hlaing Thar Yar. (2064 students)
   
2. Padauk Shwe War Monastic Education Centre
   No. 5 Ward, North Kyaut Yay Twin, Ma Yan Gone Township (over 300 students)
   
3. La Pyae Wun Orphanage
   Hmawbi Township (over 200 students)

We will be teaching the students the basic environmental education and proper waste handling, and also donate trash bins at these schools.

Volunteering at AFC U-22 Football Matches in Thuwanna Stadium

Members of Myanmar Youths in Action have been volunteering to pick up trashes after the final matches of AFC U22 football games starting from June 23, 2012.

Two football fans have donated 15 sets of trash bins to be placed at Thuwanna Stadium, so Myanmar Youths in Action placed them at appropriate places a day before the games begun.

Since the AFC U-22 Games have started on June 23, members of Myanmar Youths in Action were present at every game played by Myanmar team, and picked up trash after the games. Fans of Yangon United Football Club and Yadanarpon Football Club also joined forces with us to help us clean the stadium after the games.

2nd Anniversary Donation to Seik Phuu Taung Youth Development Centre

Two years may seem like a short period of time for some, but for Myanmar Youths in Action, it has been a meaningful and fruitful two years. Since being established in 2010, Myanmar Youths in Action has continuosuly done many activities benefiting youths, but we are still unsatisified and feels that we can do more. Thus, we will be continuing with our efforts to do more youth development activities and walking ahead in unity and with green steps, matching our slogan: "Be United, Go Green!" until eternity!

June (5) 2012 will be Myanmar Youths in Action's anniversary day, and it is also World Environment Day. Last year, we celebrated the event by planting over (700) trees. This year, we will be going to Seik Phuu Taung Youth Development Centre, and will be celebrating our anniversary together with over 700 students there.

Trash Bin Donation at Botahtaung Pagoda

One of Myanmar Youths in Action's projects for 2012 includes providing trash bins at pagodas in Yangon. MYiA have already started the first activity of this project at Shwe Phone Pwint Pagoda last month. 

This month, MYiA's second activity in "Trash Bin Project" was conducted at Botahtaung Pagoda in Botahtaung Township, Yangon. Botahtaung Pagoda is one of the famous tourist spots in Yangon, and also, many pilgrims comes to that pagoda, so it is necessary for the pagoda to have many trash bins so that visitors will be able to throw away trash properly.

We had donated 8 sets of three trash bins at the pagoda. The three trash bins were of different colours - black colour is for plastic bags and plastic bottles, and two red ones are for discarded flowers (from pagoda) and other trash.

Trash Bins Donation at Shwe Phone Pwint Pagoda

As you all know, most of the people in Myanmar does not have the practice of throwing trash into trash bins. They would throw them out of the bus window, on the streets, into rivers and streams, and into sewage ducts. Some of the reasons for throwing trash that way is because there are no trash bins in convenient locations, and because of the lack of knowledge in proper waste-handling.

One of Myanmar Youths in Action projects for 2012 includes providing trash bins for religious centres and primary schools in Yangon. Through this project, we aim to change the behaviour of the people, which will contribute to good practice and a cleaner environment. We also plan to have an education session regarding the environment at primary schools, which will integrate our previous project called "Small Educations" together with trash bin donations.

This April, we have started our first activity of the project at Shwe Phone Pwint Pagoda in Pazundaung Township. We donated trash bins with three different colours for three different trash - plastic, cans and bottles, and general trash.

"Small Education" will focus more on "Trash" in 2012

As you all know, MYiA has started its Small Education project of environmental education since late 2010. Under this project, we have educated young students about trees, environmental health, plastic and trash.

For this year 2012, we will focus on trash by providing trash bins at religious centers like pagodas and State Primary Schools in Yangon. Through this, we hope that people have good practice to throw the trash in the bins.

Throwing trash is not really a problem in other countries, but in Myanmar, people just throw the trash on the roads, in the water and behind the houses keeping the environment dirty and polluting the air. There is also a few trash bins only at some places. As our project name "Small Education", we will educate the young people and community starting from the small things. That's why we decided to provide trash bins.

Green Volunteering at Barcamp Yangon 2012

At this year's Barcamp Yangon 2012, held at Myanmar Info-Tech on February 11-12, 2012, Myanmar Youths in Action volunteered by holding a trash picking campaign. At barcamps held in the previous years, we noticed that the barcampers left many trash around, so this year, Myanmar Youths in Action provided trash cans to be placed in various locations around the Myanmar Info-Tech campus, so that it would encourage barcampers to properly throw away their trashes.

9 sets of 3 trash bins were placed around the campus, and each set's 3 trash bins were separated as "Papers", "Cans and Bottles", and "General Trash". These trash bins were borrowed from Popular Plastic Group, who created these sets of trash bins for Myanmar Plastic Industries Group. So many thanks to Popular Plastic group for helping us in making this event possible!

Our Green Volunteers rounded the campus every hour or so to check the conditions of the trash bins, to empty the full trash bins and replace with new trash bags, and to pick up the trash left by barcampers.

Green Activity @ Barcamp Yangon 2012

Once again, Barcamp Yangon 2012 will be held for the third time on 11 and 12 Feb 2012 (9:00am - 5:00pm) at Myanmar Info-Tech, Yangon. As you all know, it is a great event that around 4000 audience participate every year with  a variety of discussions. 

During this time event, Myanmar Youths in Action will participate with green volunteering at the Barcamp.

We will support trash bins (around 30 pcs) for each category of trash at barcamp and we will also collect the trash at every discussion rooms and MICT. Isn't it great, huh? So, let us invite all of you to join with us at the Barcamp Yangon 2012!

Youth Camp @ Chaung Thar 2012

Myanmar Youths in Action will organize a youth camp at Chaungthar Beach as a 3-days program from January 6 to 8, 2012. The title of the youth camp is "Impact of Human Behaviours at Chaungthar Beach", which is a research-based program. We are inviting all the young people of ages between 18 and 30 for this youth camp. All selected participants will have to pay the program fees 40,000 Ks. (at most) to cover transportation, accommodation, and meal during the camp. All applicants must be active players in youth work and volunteerism working for the society. Applicants will need to have basic knowledge on environment protection.

Inviting Environmental Photos, Poem and Cartoons for Green Exhibition

The biggest threat of 21 century and people of today is climate change and environmental problems. To protect this, it is essential to promote the knowledge of people about environment and its protection. We also believe that encouraging th.e young people to pursue the environmental activities and have more awareness to take better action for better world.

So, with the purpose of increasing environmental awareness among young people, Myanmar Youths in Action will be holding a Green Exhibition (can be changed) on Sunday, December 4, 2011 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at Sein Lann So Pyay Garden on Inya Road. We will display photo essays, poems and posters about effected environment.

We cordially invite photographers to exhibit the photos and poets and cartoonists to display their poems and cartons relating to the issue of "Green" or "Environment".

Photos and poem should be sent to info@myia.asia and we will choose the best one for the exhibition. Dead line for sending the photos, poems and cartoons is 27, November, 2011.

We are looking to receive your work to create the best outdoor exhibition with all of our efforts.

Tree Planting @ Pan Ta Pwint Taung

This Sunday, on October 23, 2011, Myanmar Youths in Action will be having a tree planting campaign at Pann Ta Pwint Taung Monastic Education Centre as a part of 350 Campaign. Interested persons are welcomed to join us. This will be the second time that Myanmar Youths in Action has gone to Pan Ta Pwint Taung for tree-planting. The last time was on July 19, 2011.

We will be planting both shady trees and plants for beauty. We are accepting donations of trees to be planted there. We also accept money donations of 500 Ks. per tree.
